The Inkdex: Characters
Many of the character descriptions may contain spoilers from both Inkheart and Inkspell. If you still have not read the books, you might not want to read the rest of this page.Mortimer "Mo" Folchart - Father of Meggie Folchart. Mortimer is a bookbinder who has the power of reading out characters from books. Years ago, he read Dustfinger out of Inkheart, in turn reading his wife into the book, inadvertently. He is also known as Silvertongue, for his gift of reading, and in Inkspell, is known as the famous robber, Bluejay.
Meggie Folchart - Protagonist; daughter of Mortimer. In Inkheart, Meggie finds out that she too has the gift of reading characters out of books, and does so with small characters, such as Tinkerbell. At the end of Inkheart, however, she reads The Shadow out of the book Inkheart, which defeats Capricorn. In Inkspell, Meggie reads Farid and herself into the book Inkheart.
Theresa "Resa" Folchart - Mother of Meggie, husband of Mortimer. Resa was read into Inkheart years ago, when Meggie was still a toddler. After being read back into the real world by a stammering book-reader, Resa loses her voice. She is reunited with Meggie, and later, when she is read back into Inkheart, she regains her ability to speak.
Elinor Loredan - Great aunt of Meggie. Elinor is a bibliophile, who forcibly becomes involved in Inkheart, and ends up housing Meggie, Mortimer, and Resa.
Dustfinger - Fire-eater; read out of Inkheart. Having been read out of his own world, Dustfinger is a very somber man. He accompanies Meggie and Mo on their journey in Inkheart, but later has Orpheus read him back into the book, Inkheart--his true home. Cornelia Funke has said that Dustfinger will make a reappearance in Inkdeath.
Gwin - An ill-tempered horned marten. Gwin is always found around Dustfinger, and does not take a liking to others, except Farid. According to Fenoglio's original version of Inkheart, Gwin was the key cause of Dustfinger's death.
Farid - A boy read out of One Thousand and One Nights. Farid eventually falls in love with Meggie, and also becomes Dustfinger's apprentice in fire-eating. Gwin takes a strong liking to Farid. SPOILER WARNING...At the end of Inkspell, Farid dies, however, he is brought back to life when Dustfinger trades his own life for Farid's.
Fenoglio - Author of the book Inkheart, and thus, also known as the Inkweaver. He is an old, good-natured man; in Inkspell, Meggie accidentally reads him into the book Inkheart. He enjoys and marvels at seeing his own world, but vows that he will never write again after seeing the new, changed Cosimo.
More coming soon.
